Let us start with the general background of the Nintendo Wii. The Wii is the gaming console that Nintendo released with the seventh-generation of consoles. The Wii is in direct competition with the Sony PlayStation 3 and with the Microsoft Xbox 360.
Nintendo has come out with five gaming consoles. The Wii console is the first one of Nintendo’s consoles to not have the name Nintendo in its name. The consoles technical name is Wii, not Nintendo Wii. However, most users refer to the unit as the Nintendo Wii so retailers often do as well.
When it comes to the gaming consoles of the seventh-generation, the Wii for some reason appears to have a leg up on what the users and game players want. Overall sales and customer satisfaction has been and remains higher for the Wii than that of the Xbox or PS3.
The Wii launch was a very exciting event for gaming lovers. Nintendo announced on September 14, 2006 the details including dates, prices, projected unit numbers and of course countries to receive units. The general response was that of joy but more than a few were concerned when the general impression that gamers perception of the announcements left was that the America’s were more important to Nintendo than was the rest of the world.

With the initial release, the America’s were being allotted more units than anyone else. This more than a little upset some of Nintendo fans and users. The UK was especially hit hard by such small amounts of game consoles available for sale. Both online and land Nintendo sellers were finding themselves short stocked. They found themselves unable to even fill pre-sold units.
Since Nintendo first released the Wii, it has almost doubled the sales of its competitors the Xbox and the PS3. In fact, in the year it was launched, the Wii sold almost more units than if you took the number of Xbox units and the number of PS3 units and added them together.
Even after the initial newness or hype with the release of the Wii passing, the Wii still surpassed the sales of the Xbox and the PS3 on a monthly basis. For the first time since the Super Nintendo Gaming console, Nintendo had once again come out on top for sales of the current generation of game consoles. In fact, in 2007 the Wii was the second best selling game console.
Incidentally, the best seller was also a console made by Nintendo. It was the Nintendo DS. I guess for Nintendo that was a good thing but as far as the Wii goes, second was not good enough. Nintendo stepped up its advertising and promotional approach to sales of the Wii and now the Wii remains the best selling gaming console.
Let us take a look at a few factors those ads into the fact that public opinion of the Wii continues to soar high. First of all, Nintendo set out to improve sales with their seventh generation game console. They wanted a superior gaming unit and did the necessary research and improvements that were needed to accomplish that. The difference is they did not aim to, “fight Sony” but rather interest more players in the Wii.
The first way that Nintendo accomplished this is by including all ages in their ad campaigns. There is no set age that they are targeting with the new console rather, they encourage game play by all ages and all walks of like just the same.
The next thing that Nintendo has accomplished with the Wii is making the console as compact as possible. The previous generation of gaming consoles was a lot larger and much bulkier. The Wii has a sleek and slim design which appeals to a lot of gamers.
The next thing that Nintendo has done to appeal to many users is to be backward compatible with the game discs from the Nintendo GameCube console. You can play both Wii and GameCube games via the Wii console.
This fact is extremely nice to the GameCube players that are true Nintendo fanatics that also purchased the Wii by Nintendo. They do not have to go out and purchase their favorite games all over again to play them on the Wii. In addition to the games themselves, the Wii is also compatible with the memory cards and the controllers of the GameCube.
The one new feature that is best liked by parents and most disliked by their children is the option of the Wii game console for parental controls. With the fact that parents are spending their hard earned money on the gaming consoles for their children to play, many parents voiced the opinion that they should have some sort of control over what games their children are and are not allowed to play.
Nintendo answered this opposition in kind. They agreed and installed parental controls which now allow parents to sensor the content of the video games they allow their children to play.
The console has an overload code that a parent can enter the override password in to play games that are rated beyond what they want their children to play.
Nintendo has taken every step to make the Wii as user friendly as possible. They have taken children and adults, young adults and the elderly into consideration and came up with an assortment of games that all can find something they like to play. Check one out for yourself.
